ReadyCents vs YNAB

ReadyCents and YNAB, side by side.

YNAB is a genuinely good zero-based budgeting system, and ReadyCents would not exist without the method it popularised. The differences are about price, how transactions get in, and what happens around the budget.

Fair start

What YNAB does well.

Worth saying plainly, because picking a budgeting app is personal and YNAB is a real option.

  • A proven, well-taught zero-based method with a large education and support ecosystem
  • Direct Import for supported regions and institutions
  • Targets and a loan planner built around the same give-every-dollar-a-job idea
  • A long track record and an established community
Where they differ

What ReadyCents does differently.

Manual budgeting is not the downgrade

ReadyCents is manual-first by design. Envelopes, goals, the calendar, reports and YNAB or CSV imports are all free, with no time limit and no card. Connecting a bank is an option you take when you want it, not the thing that makes the budget work.

You choose how transactions arrive

As well as manual entry and file imports, you can use ReadyCents-managed Plaid connections or bring your own SimpleFIN or Lunch Flow account. YNAB uses its own Direct Import.

Repayments have somewhere to live

ReadyCents tracks the reimbursable share of a purchase in a Money Owed to Me envelope until it is repaid, and never counts it as income. It also supports linked transfers between separate Personal, Household and Business budgets.

Tax classification is built in

Business against personal classification, deductible tagging and tax-year summaries are part of the product through the Tax Toolkit rather than something to reconstruct in a spreadsheet.

Side by side

ReadyCents against YNAB.

Every claim about YNAB comes from its own public material and was accurate when written.

Moving across

What switching actually involves.

01

Bring your budget and history

ReadyCents imports YNAB exports directly, so you start with your categories and past transactions rather than an empty month.

02

Imports will not duplicate what you entered

Matching compares account, amount, date, direction and payee, so a partial migration or an overlapping import does not double your ledger.

03

The method carries over

If you already think in terms of giving every dollar a job, the mental model is the same. Ready to Budget is the number you are driving to zero.

Stay with YNAB if

You are happy with YNAB, rely on Direct Import for your specific banks, and value its education ecosystem. It is a good product and there is no reason to move for its own sake.

Try ReadyCents if

You want manual budgeting that is free rather than trial-limited, would rather choose your own sync provider, or need reimbursement tracking and tax classification inside the budget.

Free forever to budget by hand, $9.99 a month for Connected Premium, or a one-time $5 pass for 60 days of the connected experience.

Try it before you decide.

Manual budgeting, envelopes, goals and imports are free for as long as you like. If you want to see bank sync first, the 60-day pass is one payment with no renewal.
